Newsletter ArchivesColumn H – March 05The Hassall Legacy Continues to GrowThe founding father of Hassall & Associates Pty Ltd, Mr Huon Hassall, has been awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM)The medal is in recognition of Huon’s contribution to primary industry and to his work in the international development field. Huon founded Hassall & Associates in 1964. In the early years the company focused on providing advice to local farmers before branching into the international development scene. Huon is credited with gaining the company’s successful entry into offshore consulting in 1968 when the company was awarded one of the first private sector consulting assignments to the then fledging Australian development assistance program. This first project was in Korea, with an implementation phase, which spanned five years, laying the foundation for Hassall & Associates’ strong reputation in the international development consulting field. Throughout his career, Huon has undertaken 88 consultancies to 18 countries. Sixteen of these consultancies were to China and have contributed to the company’s strong relationship with this country, a relationship strengthened by the opening of the office in Beijing. Huon will receive his medal at an investiture at Government House in Sydney in May. This is not the first time Huon’s work has been recognized. In 1973 he received an award for “Outstanding Service to Livestock Development” from the Korean Ministry of Agriculture; in 1988 he received an award for “Outstanding Expert” from the People’s Republic of China; and in 1995 he received an “Achievement in Community Services Overseas” award from the University of Sydney alumni. We all congratulate Huon on this well-deserved recognition of his efforts and achievements.Return to Newsletter Archives |
