Fakhrurrazi

Village Facilitator

Local Governance and Infrastructure for Communities in Aceh (LOGICA) Project

Fakhrurrazi is a young emerging Acehnese leader who has a strong personal commitment to the development and betterment of his community. As a tsunami survivor himself, he has rebounded from great personal loss to pursue an objective of empowering local villages in the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Aceh.

Fakhrurrazi works as a full time village facilitator on LOGICA, in one of the worst tsunami affected areas in Aceh, working with villagers to find community-based solutions to unresolved problems and unmet needs.

During his first week, he worked with the village to campaign for a regular supply of electricity. Despite numerous commitments from the national power authority and government officials, the community had remained without power since the tsunami. Fakhrurrazi organised local community leaders and villagers from a neighbouring community to mount a media campaign, conduct needs assessments and to lobby public officials.  As a result, three months after the campaign the national power authority gave priority to the village and a permanent electricity supply was connected.

He also worked with local teenagers in two villages to develop basic computer training courses that could enhance their employability. The courses were conducted without donor support and using two old computers. Following this initiative, Fakhrurrazi then worked with the village to establish a community library for children and other activities for local teenagers.

Fakhrurrazi successfully assisted in resolving community tensions arising from a lengthy delay in the construction of project village halls. He managed to turn around a potentially hostile community sentiment into one of collaboration, mutual trust and cooperation with LOGICA. Fakhrurrazi has won the respect of the community and they readily identify him as ‘a brother’ and consult him in the resolution of community conflicts and disputes.
